The Aesthetics of Artistic Form in Mahmoud Darwish’s poem “The Song and the Sultan” The Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish has enriched Arabic Literature with his nationalistic poems; dedicating a lifetime to a poetic expression of love towards his homeland in a body of work that is aesthetically rich, as well as scathingly revealing politically. This study closely examines the aesthetics of artistic form in the poem, “The Song and the Sultan,” highlighting the role of syntax and lexicon in the poem in voicing the resistance of the Palestinian people as well as revealing the oppressor’s antagonism to such poetic discourse. The study employs a stylistic analysis approach to the poem by analyzing and highlighting the aesthetics of metaphor, imagery in the poetic discourse; and exploring deviations, alliterations and paradoxes. Such literary devices are employed by the poet to build a sequential and contrapuntal poetic narrative. Employing a stylistic approach and methodology, the study explores the following poetic themes: 1. The semiotics of the title of the poem. 2. A structural analysis of the poem: - The Song as a counter voice - Greed and Revenge - Challenge and Perseverance - Hope and Optimism - A call for a Revolution.
